MY COVID JOURNEY   ( PART I) …….. Dr. Digambar Naik

Lessons learnt

With more than 6 months of regular learning, analysing, training and teaching I was so much confident of carrying on with my OPD, hospital practice as well as routine life. Complete PPE was my way of working in the OPD and hospital set up.

Besides this I carried on primary prevention with medication like HCQ, Ivermectin, Zinc, Vitamin C,  Vitamin D along with all necessary personal and social precautions. We do not know how mistakes happen, like an accident on the road. Me and my wife were on a Sunday drive together. Suddenly one of her very close friend’s daughter phones her up saying, my mother has been detected to be suffering from Cancer of ovary with secondary’s in lung. She further requested her that they want an opinion from me. We were very close to their house.

It was but natural that I had the request from my wife to drop in and quickly have a look at the report. This would also mean a friendly visit too. We quickly dropped in and sat down, started going through the report, answered a volley of questions and came out of the house. But this time we were surrounded by 8 relatives, all without masks or any social distancing, practically gearing us to get answers for their queries. We had no escape. It is only when we came out, did we realise the mistake we had done after being extra careful for the last 6 months. I was very conscious of this and on the 5th day when I had a mild fever, I suspected and we both went for the Covid Antigen Test and started the full mild case treatment even without waiting for the report of the test. Lo, madam was positive and my report came negative. Both of us continued with the treatment part, my fever was settling. We both quarantined ourselves and were very comfortable.

It was 8th day of fever, 13th day of exposure around 8 pm I suddenly noticed mild breathlessness and the SPO2 which was being properly monitored was 85. Having kept oxygenator ready at home, I immediately connected myself to the oxygenator, but could realise that my oxygen requirement was gradually rising. I rang up my friend physician Oscar and got myself shifted to the Healthway hospital where CT Scan showed Covid infiltration with CT score of 6/25.

Lessons learnt:

1. Accidents happen inspite of the best care.

2. The  claims of the preventive drugs used and other measures need to be revised

3. I feel people have been drugging themselves unnecessary.

4. The word “Immunity” has been too much exploited by the market with piles of fake products and businesses.
