Today I saw a 70 years old patient. She was generally healthy and well controlled with diabetes and Hypertension which she had for many years. She was under my care for the last few years For all assumptions she would live a few more years very healthily. Her children were all involved in taking care keeping her healthy and happy. The family was very loving to the elderly mother.

She slipped in her house and fell down and developed a fracture of the neck of femur. This warranted a surgery. The children agreed to surgery. They selected a very good surgeon in their area and got her admitted to a very good hospital.

The surgery went on very well. There were no complications or post-operative anxiety. The patient was admitted to the hospital for 10 days and everyone was happy. The relatives were happy and thanked the hospital and went home. They followed all the necessary instructions from the surgeon and were in touch with the surgeon.

As she was following with me they brought her to me. After checking her I was shocked to see three big bedsores on her body that were smelling and full of pus and slough.

When I went to dress them they were already bone deep. I knew for sure that this lady will not be able to heal such massive bedsores and would eventually lose her life, not because of fracture but because of bedsores.

Bedsores need to be prevented in all patients who undergo surgery and stay in the bed for longer than 2-3 days. It is very difficult to heal them later on. As the bedsores grow the patients have a very pathetic bedridden stage and would eventually succumb to septicaemia.

What do we learn from this?

1...The falls in elderly are common and all care must be taken by the builders and relatives to see that this should be avoided. You can download such precautions from the Google.

2...It is a routine practise for the hospital to take all such precautions to avoid the bedsores. This proper nursing care is the basic norm for a hospital. Patient getting bedsore in the hospital can go as medical negligence from the hospital. Bedsores are preventable and necessary care should be taken to see that they don’t happen. Every physician and surgeon must look at their patients and remind the nurses to see that this negligence does not happen to any of their patients.

A good nursing care is required for any of the hospitalised patient to go home without carrying a hospital created new problem like bedsores, nosocomial infections etc.

It is a responsibility of the hospital to see that they do not add to such woes to the patient who comes there with all hopes to get alright
